Sugar Bowl Fund lends a hand
to families in crisis

 

In partnership with four local Knights of Columbus chapters, Catholic Charities provides the Sugar Bowl Fund for two-parent families in South Sarasota County who are in financial crises due to unexpected expenses for car repair, medical bills, or rent or mortgage payments.

Mission

Catholic Charities Diocese of Venice Inc. and Knights of Columbus District 33 working in a collaborative effort to keep the two parent families healthy by providing financial assistance.

Qualifications for receiving funds:

Two parent family, living in southern Sarasota County or in the Grove City area with children under 18 years of age that are in an unexpected financial crisis due to an emergency housing, medical, or transportation expense.

How to apply for and receive assistance:

  • A potential client or a potential client’s representative contacts the Catholic Charities of Sarasota County. Contact information is listed below.
  • The Caseworker reviews the  client's case and confirms legitimacy of claim.
  • If claim is approved the check is sent to the vendor.

Fund Disbursement:

Disbursement of up to $500 can be offered. The client has no obligation to repay the funds.

In extraordinary circumstances, grants up to $1,000 can be disbursed. 

Source of Donations:

  • An anonymous benefactor matches donations dollar for dollar to the Sugar Bowl Fund.
  • Founder Robert Hunter also provides matching funds.
  • Individual donations by Knights of Columbus Councils.
  • Individual donations.
  • Special fund raising activities.
