New program "checks in" on vulnerable elderly

Fort Myers--Catholic Charities of Lee County now offers an Elderly Services Program that promotes and sustains the dignity and independence of seniors in the community.

The Telephone Reassurance Project is offered to isolated seniors. Scheduled daily telephone calls are made by volunteers to ensure they are all right, provide medication reminders, or just to say hello.

“I have worked with a program like this in the past and it is very effective and successful,” said Chris Nolan, Program Director of Catholic Charities of Lee County.  "The phone calls keep homebound seniors connected to the world and give them a sense of security because someone is checking in on them," she said.

Volunteers are needed to make these important calls to vulnerable elderly. Training is provided by Catholic Charities of Lee County.

In-Home Services also are offered to assist elderly persons with activities of daily living such as bathing, toileting, meal preparation, cleaning, changing of bed linens, laundry, and other light personal care and housekeeping activities.
