Doctors For Charity fundraiser helps HIV/AIDS services

Sarasota--Mardi Gras was the theme of the second annual Doctors For Charity event benefiting Catholic Charities HIV/AIDS services in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. The dinner dance was held at the University Park Country Club and included a silent auction showcasing about 40 unique items...all of which were purchased by patrons.

Honorary Chairperson Dr. Vilma Vega addressed attendees and provided important information about HIV/AIDS and the work of Bethesda House and Casa San Jose, both programs of Catholic Charities. Event Committee Member Roseann Hartwick also spoke about her personal experience of losing her brother to HIV/AIDS.

"Everybody had a great time with the Mardi Gras atmosphere," said Bethesda House Program Director Sandy Gallagher. "But people also learned about what we do for people suffering with HIV. A real awareness happened for those in attendance."

Bethesda House of Catholic Charities is a community drop in center for HIV positive individuals and their families. The program provides a weekly food pantry, laundry and shower facilities, daily breakfast and lunch, case management, counseling, support groups, and many other services. Bethesda House serves approximately 200 clients every week. Casa San Jose is a residential program for men living with HIV and who are at risk of becoming homeless.

"The funds raised from this event will help with costs of food for the pantry and daily meals," said Gallagher. "We are trying to provide more protein and fresh fruits and vegetables to our clients as it is so important for them to have healthy food. People with HIV require a high-protein diet," she said.

"Our goal for this year also is to help clients obtain picture identification cards and birth certificates. Without these important documents, clients cannot access any federal or state funded programs including the Ryan White Program," said Gallagher. Proceeds from Doctors For Charity also will fund the costs of securing these items.
