Catholic Charities Ball

Gala full of Irish spirit

The 20th Anniversary Catholic Charities Ball in Sarasota, themed "An Enchanted Evening in Ireland," was an event full of Irish spirit. The gala drew almost 400 patrons who were treated to several Irish performers including a bagpiper, the Drake School of Irish Dancers, a harpist and the "Irish Rover" Paul Duffy.

Guest of Honor Bishop Frank J. Dewane of the Diocese of Venice was escorted by the bagpiper into the Ritz Carlton Ballroom, where he thanked ball patrons for providing help and creating hope for the people in need that Catholic Charities assists in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Ball Co-Chaipersons Dr. Tam Sicard and Bridgett Spiess also addressed the crowd before an Irish-themed dinner was served and dancing to the music of Mainstream commenced. Mary Kenealy-Barbetta and Helen Nugent also served as Ball Co-Chairpersons.

Silent and live auctions were part of the festivities, along with a try-your-luck "Pot of Gold." The live auction featured several getaways including a Castle in Ireland, along with two catered dinners with Bishop Dewane. Cliff Roles of WSRQ Radio served as the auctioneer.

Planning is already underway for next year's event. Anyone who is interested in serving on the ball committee or becoming a sponsor for the event, please call Catholic Charities of Sarasota and Manatee Counties at 941-379-5119.
